Thanks to the long cooperation between France and Lebanon, the bilateral cooperation in agriculture in Lebanon works on several levels:
- on the institutional level: by supporting the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture in defining a strategy for the Lebanese agriculture
- in collaboration with producers organizations: by encouraging the development of producers cooperatives
- on farms level: by introducing substitution crops and diversification (winegrape, for example)
MREA actions come on this national cooperation plan by transferring its experiences in the irrigation sector. The MREA actions in Lebanon, as in the Palestinian Territories and Jordan, are focused on irrigation techniques improvement, mostly concerned with increasing the efficiency of water used in agriculture.

Pilot area
MREA works on two pilot areas: Hermel, in the north of Beeka Plain, and Qasmieh, south of Lebanon. In each area, several demonstrations are being led in different subjects:
- tensiometric irrigation scheduling (watermarks) associating PEPISTA to acquire references
- encouraging formation of a water committee
- irrigation systems improvements on farms
In the future, the regional Agricultural Water program could operate in a large irrigation area recently implemented in the south of Beeka Valley (canal 900).
