Historical background
As improving of the management of the scarce water resources in the Middle East became a priority, the French Regional Agricultural Mission, based at the French Embassy in Amman became the French Regional Mission for Water and Agriculture, MREA, in 1995. Since that time, the mission leads irrigation projects in JordanLebanon and Palestinian Territories.
In all these countries the percentage of the water used in agriculture exceeds two thirds of the national total consumption. The MREA works on improving the efficiency of the water used in agriculture here.
MREA Objectives
Focusing on improving the efficiency of irrigation water, the MREA concentrates on the introduction of new techniques in response to new management rules in two or three pilot areas in each country.
The proposed practices and methods of introduction are supported by a comprehensive socio-economic and technical assessment of irrigated agriculture in each location.
In order to achieve change, MREA efforts focus on field demonstrations of highly efficient irrigation techniques on individual farms and/or in larger irrigated areas.
Experiments and demonstrations are being held on individual farms or in irrigated areas. These experiments and demonstrations help the MREA and its partners organize training programs and offer technical information.
This regional project is based on the technical and bilateral cooperation that France has with Jordan, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories. Our work reinforces the field actions, compares the practices of the different areas and encourages the regional transfer of local practices and technical solutions.
We publish our technical review "Water & Irrigation News" 2 to 3 times a year. The page
technical reports and articles explains and publishes the results of MREA research and development projects for the farmers and technicians of the Middle East.

Trainings
Theoretical and practical trainings (many activities on the field) are organized in the Jordan Valley. From 3 to 10 days, the main objective is to train the participants on the optimized on-farm irrigation practices.
Software
On-Farm Network Design Software. This software is used to help the user to choose the correct design parameters in the whole irrigation system starting from the Head of the Network and ending with the laterals.
Documents
Irrigation News. Download our articles published in our review
Export
Fruits and vegetables export development program. Due to its hot climate during winter, the Jordan Valley allows agricultural production in this season. This climate allows out-of-season exports to European markets.
