| Snow
peas-Sugar snaps |
 |
 |
This
market has strongly developed in Europe during
last years. The possibility of having a production
during the whole year, as well as the remoteness
of the East African competitors, suggest that
the development of the Snow peas in Jordan
is possible. |

|
| Charentais
melons |
 |
 |
This
produce specific to the French market offers
some opportunities to Jordanian producers.
In fact, French producers are seeking to complete
their production by getting supplies of melon
all around the year from countries such as
Morocco and West Indies. Also there are market
windows during which the Jordanian producers
could develop a production during November
and December, in association with European
producers/importers. |

|
| Fine
French beans |
 |
 |
Jordan
used to export bobby beans to Europe but,
due to the losses of their competitiveness
in the benefit of Moroccan and Egyptian producers,
the producers lost their markets. In spite
all this it seems conceivable today to produce
fine and extra-fine quality beans for the
export market if the producers and exporters
can get good price in the market. |
 |
|
| Strawberries |
 |
 |
Already
Jordan produces strawberries all year around
and one grower exports his production to Europe,
thanks to the Jordan valley climate. The European
markets demand a lot of strawberries during
the period from November till February: that
offers real opportunities for Jordanian producers
if they develop an early production and reach
the European standards. Then this market could
be strongly extended. |
 |
|
| Raspberries |
 |
 |
This
crop has been introduced in Jordan by the
MREA in 2003, to evaluate the possibility
of growing this plant. Needing acid soils,
the crop management sequence has to be adapted
to grow raspberries in Jordan. It seems profitable
to develop a small market for this fruit in
Jordan and in the Middle East. |
 |
|
| Okra |
 |
 |
The
export of this vegetable from Jordan (especially
to the UK) strongly increased recently. Some
expansion may be promoted through production
and export attempts. |
 |
|
| Asparagus |
 |
 |
The
Jordan Valley has all the conditions to compete
with South America on the European market
for winter asparagus. Until now the production
has been limited to the local market, but
could be developed to reach the European markets. |
 |
|
| Cut
Flowers |
 |
 |
A Jordanian flowers production exists for
the local market and for the Persian Gulf
countries, and on a small scale for Europe.
Perspectives are good for this production
since it uses modern production techniques.
Until now the MREA has not offered any technical
support to Jordanian farmers, but could soon. |
